Sunday Morning Prayer

for Sundays, Feast Days, & Memorials

Priest: Make us worthy, O Lord our God, that, according to the will of your divinity and your glorious majesty, we may serve you purely and diligently, attentively and earnestly, justly and uprightly, in holiness and without fault. May it be, O Lord, that our service be to your satisfaction, our prayer to your appeasement, our imploring for your honor, and our supplication for your reconciliation. And may the mercy and the compassion of your divinity be for the remission of the debts of your people, and the forgiveness of the sins of all the sheep of your flock, whom you have chosen for yourself in your grace and in your mercy, O Lord of all, Father, Son, & Holy Spirit, forever.

People: Amen. Barikh-Mar.

Priest: Enlighten us, O Lord, in your light, gladden us by your coming, delight us in your salvation, and let us share in your mysteries. Grant, and make us worthy, that with the heavenly assemblies clothed with light and the legions of angels, with hymns filled with thanksgiving, we may sing praise to your glorious Trinity. O creator with dominion over all! O creator who is not in need of the service of creatures! O creator of light in his grace, and orderer of darkness in his wisdom, knowledge and divinity which is incomprehensible to the spiritual and the physical, O Lord of all, Father, Son, & Holy Spirit, forever.

People: Amen.

Psalm 100
Glorify the Lord, all the earth.
O giver of light, O Lord: we lift up praise to you.
Glorify the Lord, all the earth.
Serve the Lord in gladness.
O giver of light, O Lord: we lift up praise to you.
Enter before him with praise.
Know that he is the Lord our God.
He is our maker, it was not we.
We are his people, the sheep of his flock.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise
Give thanks to him and bless his name,
for the Lord is good and eternal is his grace,
and his faithfulness is unto the ages.
GlorytotheFather,Son, & HolySpirit.
Forever and ever, amen, amen.
Glorify the Lord, all the earth.
O giver of light, O Lord: we lift up praise to you.
Nsalli shlama ‘amman.
Priest: Make us all worthy, O Lord, in your grace and mercy, to rejoice and delight in the glorious light of your revelation and the joyful dawning of your coming, that which all the creatures you have created look to, hope for and await, with all the true children of your mysteries in the heavenly Jerusalem, O Lord of all, Father, Son, & Holy Spirit, forever.

People: Amen.

Morning Hymn of Mar Ephrem
Light has dawned upon the just and joy to the upright of heart (repeat)
*Jesus Christ our sovereign Lord,
     dawning from the Father’s womb
     ushered us out of darkness
     illuming us with his light.
*Day has dawned upon mankind,
     and the power of darkness fled;
     brightness dawning from his light
     has brightened our darkened eyes.
*His glory he dawned on earth
     brightening the lowest depths;
death was made dark, dark expelled,
and the gates of Sheol destroyed.
*He enlightened all his works,
which had been in dark before,
and the dead, he raised from dust,
so that they praised their savior.
*He made for us a new life,
     to the Father’s womb returned;
     only to come in glory,
to brighten those who bide him.
*Our king will come again!
Let us light our lamps and go,
     ready to rejoice in him,
as he rejoiced, and so we!
*Let us lift up praise to him,
     to the Father giving thanks,
who in love sent him to us,
     our salvation and our hope.
*Without warning his day dawns,
and his saints are all awake,
and all those who had labored
and prepared will light their lamps.
*All the watchers in the heights
laud the glory of the just,
     placing crowns upon their heads,
     and all sing Halleluiah!
*Brethren, rise up and prepare,
give thanks to our savior king,
     who in glory will return
     to gladden us his light!
Morning Hymn of Mar Narsai
The light of the dawning of Christ has gladdened heaven and earth.
*Falsehood, like a pitch-black dark,
had been spread across the world,
but the light dawned out of Christ
     and gave the world clarity.
*History, from Adam on,
     had resembled darkest night,
but since the coming of Christ
     all has been made radiant.
*The Lord had even compared
     morning to his preaching’s start,
and the evening to the end,
when the world will take its rest.
*Priests and kings and prophets had
waited with this hope in mind,
     and the maker gave harbor
to them when he was revealed.
*In his day all creatures rest,
who had once been crushed in sin,
and the world starts to ponder
     the meaning of future things.
*The new covenant he gave
to all who accept his creed,
and with his blood he sealed it,
that his promise might not fail.
*With his promised paradise,
he made fast the course of man,
    behold, on earth and heaven
     all await his great return.
*The new coming of the king
who rules from our race has neared:
let us prepare to meet him
     among the hosts of heaven.
*Let us take the oil of love
for that day filled with despair,
lest we hear the voice tell us,
“begone, I do not know you.”
*While we live, then, let us work
in the vineyard of the Word,
that we may hear the voice call
     “Come and receive your reward.”
*Let us fix our mind’s sojourn
with the hope of life to come,
and arrive, through love and faith,
     at the harbor of delights.
Light has dawned upon the just and joy to the upright of heart (repeat)

Hymn of Glorification of Mar Theodore the Interpreter
Glory to God in the highest. (repeat)
On earth, peace.
Good hope to the sons of men.
We adore you.
We glorify you.
We exalt you.
O being without beginning.
O secret, incomprehensible nature.
O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
King of kings.
Lord of lords.
Who dwells in radiant light.
That which no man on earth has seen.
Nor is able to see.
Holy alone.
Almighty alone.
Immortal alone.
We give thanks to you.
Through the mediator of our benefits,
Jesus Christ.
The savior of the world.
The Son of the most high.
The living lamb of God.
Who takes away the sin of the world.
Have mercy on us.
Who sits at the right hand of his Father.
Accept our pleading.
For you are our God.
You are our Lord.
You are our king.
You are our savior.
You are the forgiver of our sins.
The eyes of all men look to you,
Jesus Christ.
Glory to God your Father.
To you and to the Holy Spirit.
Forever, amen.
Nsalli shlama ‘amman.
